The Summerfest 5k is held in conjunction with Harrison County Summerfest. Proceeds will benefit Miley Cizek.
Miley Cizek is a lively, spirited five-year old with beautiful blue eyes and blond hair. She is a kindergartener at Corydon Central Elementary School. She has a two-year old brother, Corbin, who is one of her best friends.
If someone were to meet Miley in public, they would have trouble telling that she suffers from Cystic Fibrosis (CF). Diagnosed at birth, Miley has never known life without the chronic disease. However, she suffers frequent respiratory difficulties, gastrointestinal problems, and frequent infections. Her daily medical treatments include over twenty pills, nebulizer treatments and twice a day vest therapy (a specialized vest that uses rapid vibrations to breakup mucus buildup in the lungs).
In her five years, Miley has been hospitalized over thirty times, not to mention frequent trips to the emergency room. She undergoes a wide range of tests monthly – lung, pancreatic and liver function, throat culture, dissolved oxygen, and x-rays. While most of Miley's direct medical expenses are covered by insurance, there's a large shortfall each month, along with indirect expenses such as travel and missed time at work.
On a positive note, Miley reached the 40 pound mark for the first time in her life. Weight is a big deal for CF patients, especially young children as they have difficulty metabolizing food. She has a special, high-fat, high-protein diet to keep a healthy body weight.
