Americana, Neo-traditional Country, Southern Blues
SUNDAY VALLEY may be hard to box into one specific genre, but the end result is the same: they please the crowd. On the heels of last year's top-rated full-length debut, To the Wind and on to Heaven, the Kentucky trio recently relocated to Nashville, where they've perfected a super-boogie style of Appalachian Bluegrass, sprinkled with the energy of punk rock and the soul of Southern blues. Their songs are definitely Kentucky; native or transplant, the sometimes joyful and mournful lyrics will make your skin crawl just a little bit. Even those that normally reject country or Bluegrass music can’t help but smile and wiggle a little when hearing Sunday Valley play live - their energy is contagious to say the least, and they rarely fail to fill a venue to fire code capacity.
"Sunday Valley’s frontman Sturgill Simpson is a singular talent, one of those one-in-a-million folks who is touched by the country music holy spirit, and has the vigor to fully realize his potential, and assert his solely original perspective on American music without fear. The man is a top shelf guitar player, with an original, Kentucky-bred style all his own, playing guitar like it’s a mandolin to create an energetic and active base for the music. But then at the right moments, he opens wide and bursts out with a rock & roll abandon, yet still somehow keeps it grounded with a Kentucky bluegrass flavor. The tone might intimidate some in the recorded format, but live, it is absolutely spellbinding."
