Lost homes. Desperate people with nowhere to go. Sex, violence, and the flirtation between the two. A society in flux, unable to go backward and unsure of what it’s becoming.
Sound like America, 2012? It’s not.
It’s the world of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire. Join the Louisville Repertory Company as we present a classic of the American theater.
Williams’ story of the titanic struggle between Blanche Dubois, last scion of the fading Old South, and Stanley Kowalski, the hulking embodiment of the rising industrial society, has been heralded as a masterpiece since its premier in 1947. LRC’s production digs deep into the play to reveal what makes this theatrical work a classic – that the world Williams captured in all its vividness has never gone away.
Streetcar is a world where a woman can lose her home through no fault of her own. Where men are as free with their sexuality as woman are restricted. Where a woman’s life is almost over if she’s 30 and single. Where sex is about power as much as intimacy. Where the dreams and promises of youth are irreconcilable with the cruel, lonely realities of adulthood. Where people with little will fight for what they have – no matter who they have to destroy to keep it. A world that resonates on the page and on the stage as if Williams had written it today.
This isn't Occupy. This isn’t CNN. This is Tennessee William’s A Streetcar Named Desire – a classic for today.
