The Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness is offering a special stop smoking class for new mothers using the Cooper/Clayton Method, a 13 week smoking cessation program.
“This class is especially targeted at new moms,” said Dr. Matt Zahn, acting director of the Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness. “We know that smoke-free environments are healthier places for babies and we know that smoking in the home is a factor for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. When a new mom becomes a non-smoker, she is not only protecting her own health but is also doing much to guard the health of her child.”
The first class will meet at the Bridges of Hope Neighborhood Place, 1411 Algonquin Pkwy on Monday, May 11 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and will be held at the same time on successive Mondays for the next twelve weeks.
The Cooper/Clayton Method to Stop Smoking consists of weekly support group meetings combined with the use of nicotine replacement products such as patches and gum. The classes are free and program participants will receive a free week’s supply of nicotine replacement products at each class. Class participants will also receive various “baby shower” incentives.
The Department of Public Health and Wellness, the Kentucky Cancer Program and other community partners also offer free stop smoking classes for the general public using the Cooper/Clayton method. Below is a list of upcoming classes. The date listed is the start day of the 13 week course. Registration for the program is required.
