Set on an island in the South Pacific during World War II, Rodgers’ and Hammerstein's Tony award winning musical is based on the Pulitzer-Prize-winning novel by James A. Michener, Tales of the South Pacific. The story involves two parallel love stories and focuses on issues of war and prejudice. Nellie Forbush, a spunky young nurse from Arkansas, falls in love with a mature French widower who has two Tonkinese children, while Lt. Joe Cable finds that he has fallen in love with a young native girl.
Many of the songs from South Pacific have become well known musical standards including "Some Enchanted Evening," "I'm Gonna Wash That Man Right Outta My Hair," "Happy Talk," "Bali Hai," "Younger than Springtime," and "I'm in Love with a Wonderful Guy.”
Charles Swarens directs a strong cast of local favorites: Laura Von Fossen plays Nellie; Gary Crocket plays the French plantation owner, Emile De Beque; Jon Driver plays Lieutenant Cable; Lynn Benson plays Bloody Mary; and Jack Sweeney, past president of Hayswood Theatre, plays Luther Billis. Included in the cast are James Aich, Kevin Anderson, Brooklyn and Deanna Bruner, Gabe Bush, Sarah Driver, Jana and Brennan Faith, Michael Gardner, Marcia Gliottone, Paul Hamann, Kira Hangar, Candace Hatfield, Jason McAfee, Kobi Mills, Samantha and Toby Morton, Kathy Norton, Heidi and Grace Platt, Jay and Melissa Renfrow, Jill Robertson, Jaedyn and Jacob Ross, Trinity Travis, and Sarah and Deacon Tyler.
