The Filson Historical Society is proud to present Filson Fridays. This is an opportunity to meet our staff as they share the results of their research in The Filson Collections. Glenn Crothers, Director of Reasearch, will discuss the clash of religious interpretation that lay at the heart of the sectional conflict in the Ohio Valley

Many white and black residents of the antebellum Ohio Valley turned to their faith to make sense of the institution of slavery and the deepening sectional divide. While Evangelical supporters of slavery devised an elaborate defense of slaveholding based on the precepts of the Bible, other believers became convinced of slavery’s immorality. African-American Christians read in the bible a message of equality and emancipation, as did a growing number of white believers who concluded that slavery could not be reconciled with Christian notions of spiritual equality and the golden rule.
