Displays of quilts by men, baby quilts, the Grandmother’s Flower Garden pattern,
and a vendors market are features of the 10th
Community School, 1 Pirate Way, in Berea. Challenge displays include Jabez Retreat quilts,
featuring specific material and “Quiltography”, a display of quilt blocks inspired by photographs,
from members of the Kentucky Heritage Quilt Society.
Activities include a talk on the history of feed sacks as material, a guided walking tour of
significant quilts in the show, and demonstrations of hand-quilting, quilt binding, paper piecing,
tee-shirt quilts, and embellishment techniques. A hands-on needle felting class takes place on
Saturday, August 2, with all materials provided for a $10 fee.
A free shuttle runs from the Extravaganza at the Community School to the Berea Arts
Council and to the Kentucky Artisan Center. “Quilts with a Kick”, an exhibit of art quilts by the
Kentucky Art Quilters, will be displayed July 25 through August 21 at the Berea Arts Council
gallery located at 139 N. Broadway. Gallery hours are 10am-4pm Monday through Saturday.
The theme for the show is “Mother Earth.”
On Saturday, Aug. 2, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the Kentucky Artisan Center hosts
a quilting demonstration by textile artist Marilyn Foulke, of Louisville. "Quilts of a Feather"
shows how she captures a variety of bird species in her quilts.
The Berea Arts Councils invites everyone in the Berea area to enter a quilt in the
Community Show. The general show is restricted to quilts not exhibited since 2009. Previously
shown quilts may be submitted to the Grandmother’s Flower Garden exhibit. Quilts will be
accepted July 24 - 26 at the Arts Council gallery.
Plenty of free parking is available at the school and throughout the town. Quilt
Extravaganza tickets are $3 in advance and $5 on the day of the
Berea Quilt Extravaganza August 1 and 2 at the
