The Court of Master Sommeliers will offer two levels of its certification process in Louisville in September. Both the level I introductory course and exam and the level II certified sommelier exam will be held at the Seelbach Hotel, 500 S. 4th St. The first two master sommeliers in Kentucky, Scott Harper of the Bristol Bar & Grille and Brett Davis of La Coop and Doc Crow’s, will lead educational programs. To register, visit www.mastersommeliers.org.
Only 140 people in the United States have completed all four program levels to receive the Master Sommelier title. Harper and Davis became certified in 2009 when they passed the exam administered in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The level I introductory course and exam takes place Sunday and Monday, Sept. 14-15. The $525 fee includes a fast-paced review for a day-and-a-half with a theory exam at the end of the second day. Those who pass receive a certificate of completion and a pin designating success. Most candidates have been employed in wine service for a minimum of three years, although this is not mandatory to enter the course.
The level II certified sommelier exam takes place on Tuesday, Sept. 16. The $325 fee includes the one-day exam only with no classroom work. Candidates are encouraged to take some time to prepare for the level II certified exam after completing the level I introductory course. As in most cities where both level I and II are offered, the level II exam is held prior to the level I introductory course because the exam is intended for those candidates who have previously passed the introductory course and have had time to prepare.
About The Court of Master Sommeliers:
The Court of Master Sommeliers was established to encourage improved standards of beverage knowledge and service in hotels and restaurants. Education was then, and remains today, the Court's charter. The first successful master sommelier examination was held in the United Kingdom in 1969. By April 1977, the Court of Master Sommeliers was established as the premier international examining body.
