Girls Leadership Saturday April 26 12:30-5pm at Jefferson Community & Technical College's Health Sciences Building
Louisville Girls Leadership (LGL) will present the second annual Girls IdeaFestival® on Saturday, April 26, 2014 from 12:30 pm to 5:00 pm at Jefferson Community & Technical College’s Health Sciences Building located at 110 W. Chestnut Street. Registration is $5, and can be accessed by visiting www.louisvillegirlsleadership.org. To kickoff the event the LGL Board of Directors will host IF Girls Rise, a reception on Friday, April 25, 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm at The Green Building, 732 East Market Street.
Inspired by the annual multi-disciplinary IdeaFestival® that fosters creativity, innovation, and transformative learning, Girls IdeaFestival® will target high school girls, high school boys, and the adults in their lives. Confirmed speakers include: keynote speaker Barbara Sexton Smith and breakout session speakers Alli Truttman of Wicked Sheets of Kiley Lane Parker of Parker Lane, LLC. The LGL leadership team, made up of high school juniors and seniors, will also hold two panel discussions titled: Everything you wish you knew about girls, but were afraid to ask!
The goal of this daylong event is to develop creative and innovative solutions to challenges girls face today. This year’s event will focus on addressing the way girls are portrayed by the media, encouraging girls to become more civically engaged, expanding girls’ career ambitions, and raising awareness of human trafficking. The ideas and solutions generated will be compiled for use in global and local action projects led by the incoming LGL Class of 2015.
The IF Girls Rise reception will be the first of its kind, showcasing challenges that young women face today, represented by unique looks coordinated in conjunction with local fashion gurus Wil Heuser, Andre Wilson, Colleen Clines, and Alexa Pence. Guests will experience a program directed by LGL participants, a silent auction featuring handcrafted fascinators, and light appetizers. General admission tickets are $35.
According to Olivia Beres, high school senior at St. Francis and Co-Chair of Louisville Girls Leadership,
“The Louisville Girls IdeaFestival fosters conversations between knowledgeable speakers and innovative young minds to tackle problems facing women today. The energetic environment highlights our metro youth, cultivates connections, and produces attainable solutions.”
