For the first show of the season, Kathi E.B. Ellis directs Emily Mann’s adaptation of Federico Garcia Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba. Set in the oppressive heat of an Andalucian village at a time when traditional morals and mores were being set against each other at the outset of the Spanish Civil War, this version of the play has a resonance eight decades later as we find ourselves in this country arguing over issues of who has ‘the right’ to marry or whether a woman has control over her own body. In 2011 a mother may not threaten to lock up her daughters for eight months’ mourning or dictate who they may or may not marry, but between societal expectations and women’s own self-censorship, we still find ways to imprison ourselves and run into real and imagined barriers. Performances will be at Shelby County Community Theatre, 801 West Main Street, Shelbyville, KY, September 29, 30, October 1, 6, 9 at 7:30p.m. and October 1, 8 at 2:30p.m. (NOTE: There will be no show on the second Friday.)
LFL will also be offering a wide variety of Community Outreach this season; everything from theatre and acting basics to curriculum-based drama workshops to conflict resolution through drama. They will offer after schools at Wilder Elementary and Hawthorne Elementary, as well as residencies in schools, Summer Drama Camps, their Teen Theatre Institute, and continue their Faith Stories Project work in Guatemala. LFL continues on the touring rosters of the Kentucky Arts Council, the Kentucky Center for the Arts, Alternate ROOTS and the Southern Arts Federation. Many of the company members are also part of the Kentucky Arts Council's Teaching Artist Directory.
