Set in a charming house in the English countryside, Howard is visited by his wife, who is also his publisher, each weekend. During the week, he is joined by his mistress, a fact of which his wife is unaware. The story begins with the departing mistress struck and apparently killed by the wife as she enters the driveway. Howard gallantly offers to dispose of the body, starting a sequence of events with one unexpected turn after another.
