Land of Tomorrow is pleased to announce Summer Heat. This new exhibition will open on the 15th of July with a reception on the 23rd at 7pm. Summer Heat will include works by several artists who are exploring sexuality and gender in their works.
Sexuality and gender have been favorite subjects of artists since art’s inception – think of classical Greek sculptures of the ideal male form, the female lure in Botticelli’s works, coquettish Danae rendered by Rembrandt, Fragonard’s young lady on a swing, gender bending performances of the 60s, Mapplethorpe’s photography… The issue of gender and sexuality remains a subject of profound interest for artists, and the visual outcome of this interest continues to intrigue audiences worldwide.
Summer Heat continues in the same vein. This exhibition explores various aspects of sexuality and gender in today’s Information Age. Issues of ambiguity, mutability, social acceptance and the dichotomy between the sexes will be examined through means of images, objects, performances, videos and public displays of affection. Summer Heat will serve as a sexual journey for the viewer allowing the gallery goer to explore their own sexuality through the works in the exhibition.

In addition, the opening reception for Summer Heat will also be a reception for For The Love LOT x SoS Street Art Consortium: A celebration of music, art, and culture. Land of Tomorrow and Saving Our Style are coming together with the common goal of promoting positive street culture through a consortium of artistic outlets. The evening will be a celebration of music, art and culture, and exposition of live performances.
The event will focus on live arts within the realm of hip hop culture. Hip hop was founded in the late 1970s in New York City. The four pillars of hip hop culture as outlined by DJ Afrika Bambaataa, one of the progenitors of Hip Hop, are MCing (rapping), DJing, break dancing, and graffiti. Since its inception, hip hop has spread far beyond the inner city streets of NYC, becoming an international movement adored by countless people around the world.
Hip Hop has become localized in many cities worldwide; the way hip hop is expressed varies depending on the larger culture in which the participants lives. The For the Love event will reflect how Louisville culture has influenced the sights and sounds of local hip hop artists. For the Love will have all four elements of hip hop represented during the event: Louisville DJ, DJ Fluid aka Yao Money will DJ the event. There will also be hip hop performances from Jalin Roze who just released his critically acclaimed album The Brilliance, and other yet-to-be confirmed local music artists. Local artist Derek Hart will display some of his paintings that incorporate the use of spray paint, representing graffiti art. – Written by Chester Johnson of Saving our Style
