For students ages 16-18. Limited to 20 students. Free, pre-registration required (812) 944-7336. This is a special program for teens to learn about sustainability through conversations and activities about alternative energy, the carbon cycle and how trash can be turned into an energy source, led by Sarah Lynn Cunningham of the Louisville Climate Action Network. The class content will consist of a mix of discussion, video presentation, and demonstration. A brief introduction to the social, economic, and environmental aspects of sustainability will be followed by a discussion on climate change, featuring an illustrated presentation on examples of solutions to climate change (which also create green jobs and improve the economy). After a short break, students will learn about the fire arts (glass, metal, and ceramics), including video presentations on Louisville metal artist Craig Kaviar and Glassworks. An introduction to the history and purpose of Ohio Valley Creative Energy will be followed by a break-out activity in the Carnegie Center’s current exhibit "Powering Creativity: Air, Fuel, Heat". Students will evaluate works in the gallery in groups and then reconvene to discuss and calculate the average carbon emission reductions by fueling the typical metal, clay and glass studios with waste methane gas. To finish up, students will enjoy a pottery wheel demonstration with artist and OVCE board member Benjamin Hunter.
