Hite Art Institute Summer Exhibitions
Hite Galleries, Schneider Hall
June 27 - August 7, 2011
Opening Reception: Thursday, July 14, 4:30-6:30pm
The Hite Art Institute’s summer exhibitions at Schneider Hall will feature a variety of interests, ideas and artists. Each of the galleries’ three exhibition spaces will contain a different exhibition.
The Belknap Gallery will introduce an exhibition of artists’ books from the collection of the Bridwell Art Library. Curated by Art Librarian Gail Gilbert, the show will highlight over forty unique and varied book works recently added to the collection of rare and special books, all of which were in the Bridwell’s collection of over three hundred such works. A relatively recent genre, the artists’ books presented here are as much objects as literary tomes, and employ a wide variety of materials, construction techniques and artistic approaches.
In Gallery X, Louisville artist and Hite alumni, Joseph McGee has responded to the recent upheavals in Egypt with a visual meditation on the Sphinx. Always a fascination to artists, historians, anthropologists and travelers of every strip, Egypt’s timeless sense of enigma seems even more cogent today as the world watches what is happening in this ancient civilization.
Finally in the Covi Gallery, Sara Northerner, the University’s first PhD graduate of the new interdisciplinary Humanities doctorate in Aesthetics and Creative Studies, will present the visual artwork that was a part of her dissertation, The Phenomenological Essence of Image.
The exhibitions open Monday June 27 and continue through August 7.
