If you're a teen driver or parent of a teen driver, this program is for you.
The Ford Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) hands-on teen driving program is returning to Louisville on September 13 and 14. The FREE award-winning program is aimed at reducing teen fatalities by providing hands-on training to 400 Kentucky teens in advanced skills that address major contributors to traffic crashes involving new drivers. A recent report by the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) shows that teen driver fatalities are on the rise among drivers ages 16-17. According to data from the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety, 86 drivers under the age of 21 were killed in car crashes in 2013, with an additional 7,532 injury-causing teen accidents. Teens participating in the DSFL program will have the chance to drive specially equipped vehicles that simulate wet or potentially dangerous driving conditions on road courses under the supervision of professional instructors. They’ll learn how to improve skills in four key areas: hazard recognition, vehicle handling, space management and speed management. New curriculum has been introduced this year that includes the dangers of driving “selfies” and exercises involving a new drunk suit.
Kentucky teens who hold a valid learners permit or drivers license can sign up for one of four free sessions thanks to a partnership between Ford Motor Company Fund, the Governors Highway Safety Association, Louisvile Ford Dealers and the Kentucky Office of Highway Safety. Parents are also encouraged to attend.
