Country music singer/songwriter Frankie Ballard is riding high thanks to his immediate classic Helluva Life, which scaled Billboard’s country airplay chart earlier this year. Ballard, 31, has followed up Helluva Life with a summertime smash Sunshine & Whiskey, the title track to his hit sophomore album.
Hailing from Battle Creek, Mi., Ballard won a songwriting contest sponsored by Kenny Chesney six years ago in Michigan. Ballard later opened for Chesney at several Michigan venues and has been a frequent opening act since.
In 2011, the soulful-singing baritone put out a self-titled album that contained a couple of Top-40 hits: Tell Me You Get Lonely and A Buncha Girls. Three years later, Ballard is putting on raucous concerts that allow him to rev up his guitar solos in the tradition of his heroes, Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Ballard played May 2 in Louisville at the 2014 Unbridled Eve Derby Gala.
“My bread and butter is playing live,” Ballard says. “The band and I really hammer the road and I don’t want to slow down. And the best is when the connection comes through one of your songs. To watch someone sing your song at the top of their lungs because they’ve been through the same thing, well, that means as much to a performer as it does to a fan, and that’s what keeps me going. I’m always trying to push myself to the next level with my stage performance.”
