The Filson has one of the finest Civil War manuscript and artifact collections in the state, which are featured in the exhibit “United We Stand, Divided We Fall: The Civil War in Kentucky and the Ohio Valley.” The exhibit, which commemorates the sesquicentennial of the beginning of the Civil War, will focus on the war in Kentucky and the Ohio Valley region. The exhibit takes a thematic, rather than chronological, approach to the war, starting in the 1850’s and focusing on the growing division between the North and South. “United We Stand, Divided We Fall” features artifacts such as flags, weapons, uniforms, dresses, and medical instruments. Among the manuscripts, there are letters, documents, photos, and prints describing camp life, death and mourning, Civil War-era medicine, prisoners of war, communication, and women and the home front. All items displayed belong to The Filson’s collections.
