From 1989 to 1995, artists Jan Albers and Karen Titus took photographs and interviewed people they encountered along U.S. Route 20, the longest transcontinental highway in the United States (3,365 miles). Reaching from coast to coast, it begins in Boston, MA and continues through 12 states, ending at the Pacific Ocean in Newport, Oregon. U.S. Route 20 enters Indiana in the Northeast corner and then follows the northern edge of the state, passing through Lagrange, Elkhart, South Bend, Michigan City and Gary. During their journey, Albers and Titus documented sites, events, and stories of people who live and work along this road.
