The Music Behind “An Evening with Poe”
Live musical accompaniment for “An Evening with Poe” is provided by The Tamerlane Trio, an ensemble of local musicians formed specifically for our “An Evening with Poe” series. Amber Estes (voice), Mick Sullivan (guitar, banjo, mandolin and voice) and Rob Collier (bass and voice) have collaborated and performed independently with groups such as Sandpaper Dolls, Fire the Saddle, Liberation Prophecy and Squeeze-bot, among others.
Scores pull largely from music played in the Appalachia region during Poe’s time. Having grown up in Richmond, Va., Poe certainly would have heard the music of slaves, the strings of a banjo, as well as the popular parlor music of the day. The Tamerlane Trio plays folk songs carried from the British Isles, music composed by personal acquaintances of Poe and some of the day’s most popular songs – many of which are now largely forgotten.
Crafting an unusual repertoire of 19th century music specifically for “An Evening with Poe” performances, the trio has also written an original musical setting for Poe’s “Dream Within a Dream,” along with an original score for some of the evening’s onstage action.
