The unexpected news of the Bluegrass Pipeline proposed a few months ago to carry Natural Gas Liquids (NGLs) through central Kentucky and Ohio has begun to raise awareness in our region of the alarmingly high environmental and human risks resulting from the much-acclaimed national “Energy Independence” boom. From “fracking” in 26 states to tarsands mining in Canada’s boreal forests to massive petrochemical production along the Gulf coast (and all the high-volume, high-pressure pipelines needed to connect them all!), we are witnessing the development of a new generation of fossil fuel extraction infrastructures that can threaten the health of all the life systems, human and Earth, in their path. These infrastructures, sometimes referred to as unconventional oil and gas development, pose pollution risks to the air and water systems upon which all life on Earth depends.

This one-day event will draw upon the expertise and wisdom of three highly qualified and innovative regional leaders to help us explore what is at stake for creation, why we need to respond as people of faith in accord with our respective beliefs and practices, and how we might practically influence humanity’s future by learning and working together within and among our various faith communities.
