How To Prepare Your Kid(s):
The most important elements of exposure to triathlon for very young athletes are fun and safety. Between the ages of six and ten, when many kids are introduced to triathlon, they also play soccer and baseball, take swim lessons, practice gymnastics or hockey, and hopefully enjoy a variety of other sporting experiences throughout the course of the year. The multisport experience can be as simple as combining three activities that any kid should be doing for fun already - swimming, biking and running. It is important to recognize that triathlon is one experience among many. If the experience is not fun, rewarding and safe, the athlete may be lost on the sport forever.
If anything, young athletes are resilient and recover quickly from short bouts of exercise with proper nutrition. The average youth triathlon takes between 15 and 25 minutes to complete. This is roughly half the duration of a youth soccer game or swim practice. That said, the youth triathlon coach must consider the cumulative effect of the young athlete’s participation in multiple sports practices and games during the course of the week before scheduling additional triathlon training or competitions. Practice sessions that focus on the development of correct biomechanics, safe operation of the bicycle and fitness building can suffice. Often youth athletes are introduced to the sport first through a race experience before attending a clinic, joining a youth club or getting the advice of a coach.
Overall, the kids need to practice all 3 sports in a fun and safe manner and not over do it. The goal is to begin a lifetime in the sport.
