Carmichael's Bookstore, Louisville's oldest independent bookstore will be opening a new store exclusively for children this summer. The store, called Carmichael's Kids, will be located at 1313 Bardstown Road next to Discoveries and The Bristol Bar and Grille.
Kelly Estep, who will manage the new store, said, “We've wanted to open a store devoted to children's books for some time now, but the right opportunity hadn't come along. With a space becoming available virtually next door to our Bardstown Road store, we knew it was time to make this idea a reality.”
The store will be primarily a bookstore, but will also carry a selection of toys, games, and other gifts as carefully curated as the book and gift selections found in Carmichael's two bookstores for the 36 years they've been in business in Louisville.
In conjunction with the new store, Carmichael's applied for a grant from best-selling author James Patterson. Last September, James Patterson announced his intention to give away $1 million to independent bookstores across the country. The first round of grants gave $267,000 to 54 stores. Carmichael's was included in the second round of grants announced on May 28, 2014. Patterson announced the grants in person at a special event during BookExpo America in New York City. As he handed out checks totaling $268,000 to 43 bookstores, he said, “Every day, booksellers are out there saving our country's literature.”
Carmichael's is currently remodeling the storefront at 1313 Bardstown Road and plans to be open in early August. The store will host special events for children as well as story times and author events.
