Our second annual Buy Nothing Day Coat Drive will be held Friday, November 25th, 2011, from 10a-2p. This event has spread from two locations in 2010 to eight locations in 2011, due to the overwhelming success of last year’s drives.
Traditionally one of the biggest retail spending days of the year, we will encourage a different kind of exchange on Black Friday.
The event is coordinated in Louisville by Ted Loebenberg of Brokers Unlimited Inc Professional Auctioneers. Ted coordinated several years of successful coat drives in his native Rhode Island, and is now excited to continue the initiative in Kentucky. In Radcliff, the effort is coordinated by Rotary Club 3747.
Anyone wishing to donate a winter coat, or many winter coats, as often churches and community groups collect coats to bring to the event en masse, is encouraged to bring it to any of the listed locations, on November 25th, 2011 at 9a.
Anyone who needs a winter coat, or winter coats for their family, is most welcome to come to the event between 10 AM and 2 PM on the 25th and take what coats they need.
Buy Nothing Day is a concept first started by AdBusters to encourage conscious thought and resistance to consumerism on Black Friday. We hope to take that idea and cultivate community and caring.
The idea is an exchange amongst community: those who can, donate a coat, those who need, take a coat. Anyone wishing to volunteer is most welcome.
Sponsors include: The Green Building and Gill Holland, Brokers Unlimited Inc and Ted Loebenberg, Dr. Mary Gordinier, the Westport Baptist Church, Schmitt’s Florist, First Unitarian Church, Sav-a-Lot Food Store, Rotaract Club of Greater Louisville, Prospect Goshen Rotary Club, Louisville Police Department.
