LOUISVILLE, KY (September 21, 2011) … John Ranard may best be known for his prize-winning documentation of the AIDS crisis in Russia that appeared in the New York Times in 1997, but he is equally celebrated by those who remember him from his days in Louisville. Selected works by John Ranard’s The Brutal Aesthetic, will be on exhibit at the Muhammad Ali Center from September 23-November 30. The exhibition features 27 black and white photos, many of which were published in On Boxing, by Joyce Carol Oates in 1986. The exhibit is curated by Marcy Werner as part of her Master’s thesis at the University of Louisville’s Critical and Curatorial program. Many of the photographs were taken in Louisville and feature local boxers, including Greg Page. As a social documentary photographer, John Ranard was interested in various cultures, usually those on the fringes of mainstream society. In The Brutal Aesthetic, Ranard captures some of the intensely personal moments of the “sweet science” that combine familiar scenes with private moments that are unexpected and largely unseen by the public. Ranard’s work has been supported by grants from Doctors Without Borders and the Open Society Institute, and has been exhibited around the world. In addition, Ranard has won many awards including the 1987 Kentucky Arts Council’s Al Smith Fellowship Award. Ranard passed away in 2008 at the age of 56. The exhibit is free with the regular price of admission. The Ali Center is located at 144 North Sixth Street in downtown Louisville, Kentucky. Hours of operation are Sunday from 12 noon- 5:00 p.m. and Tuesday through Saturday 9:30a.m.- 5:00 p.m. |
