Carmichael's Bookstore will host an event for turf writer Brendan O'Meara to celebrate the publication of his book Six Weeks in Saratoga: How three-Year-Old Filly Rachel Alexandra Beat the Boys and Became Horse of the Year on Monday, October 10th beginning at 7 PM at Carmichael's on Frankfort Avenue. Calvin Borel, the jockey who rode Rachel Alexandra to victory in the Kentucky Oaks and the Preakness Stakes will be a special guest the event.
Six Weeks in Saratoga is the inside story of how the filly Rachel Alexandra captured the hearts of race fans everywhere, beat the best horses of her day, and was named Horse of the Year in 2009. The book focuses on the summer season at Saratoga Race Course, where the superstar filly ran an electrifying race against older horses and became the first filly to win the prestigious Woodward Stakes. With behind-the-scenes details and a fascinating array of characters, including trainer Steve Asmussen, jockey Calvin Borel, the New York Racing Association chief Charlie Hayward and hall-of-fame trainer Nick Zito, O'Meara describes the challenges facing each of the different players in the racing game.
Brendan O’Meara is a freelance writer and blogger based in Saratoga Springs, New York. He has written about racing for several publications including Blood-Horse, The Paulick Report and Horse Race Insider. Six Weeks in Saratoga is his first book.
