Author Michael A. Peak pays tribute to the talents of Captain Adolph G. Metzner in his latest book, "Blood Shed in This War: Civil War Illustrations by Captain Adolph Metzner."
In this wonderful visual diary, Metzner used art to record his impressions of army life. Metzner, a German-born druggist, joined the first German, 32nd Regiment Indiana Volunteer Infantry in 1861. At first, his renditions were humorous, but after the loss of comrades at the Battle of Rowlett's Station, Kentucky in 1861, his art takes a darker turn and shows the turmoil and struggle faced by the remaining soldiers.
Michael A. Peak is a Louisville native with roots dating back to the early 1780's. In addition to "Blood Shed in This War," he has published several articles and released two books on the 32nd. Indiana.
