The University of Louisville Hite Art Institute is pleased to announce the opening of Artrepreneurs: Work from Louisville Women Arts Leader From the Hite Collection, an exhibition featuring paintings, prints, and textiles by Louisville female artists from the early 20th century. The exhibition, which is on display in the Morris Belknap Gallery in Schneider Hall on the University of Louisville’s main campus, will open May 30 and will run until July 6, 2014.
The story of the visual arts in Louisville in the first half of the twentieth century is one dominated by women artists who were leaders in changing the culture of the city. Their Innovation, creativity, assurance and effective leadership were the transformative engines of cultural change.
Artrepreneurs examines the individual creative work of several of these change agents with the expectation, that this personal image making is revelatory about the individuals who shaped the city's cultural fabric in addition to adding to its artistic legacy.
Artrepreneurs was initiated as a class project by the curatorial practice seminar, ARTH 548 in the spring semester of 2014. In addition to their instructor, John P. Begley, the following students have contributed to the research, selection, shaping and interpretation of this exhibition: Kate Cassidy, Anna Mallory, Jaclyn Mueller, Laura Valentine and Callie Yu, five young women who hopefully will have they same dynamic impact on our community as the women they present in this exhibition.
