21c Museum will welcome Chris Doyle for a free artist lecture on THURS 05.30.2013 at 7pm in the Atrium Gallery. Doyle is a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York, whose work is both part of the site-specific collection at 21c Bentonville and is currently featured in the inaugural exhibition Hybridity: The New Frontier. Included in Hybridity are four large-scale watercolors and the animation screening in the 21c video lounge, Waste_Generation. The second in a planned series of five animations based on Course of Empire, by 19th-century Hudson River painter Thomas Cole, Doyle’s animation focuses on the relationship between nature and our cultural conceptions of nature as expressed in painting, architecture, and currency design. Referencing paper currency in concept and composition, Doyle’s Unfolded, a site-specific wallpaper installation at 21c Bentonville, charts the cyclical evolution of paper, from tree to pulp to paper to currency and beyond, narrating Waste_Generation across space, as the animation unfolds over time.
