Local artist Claudia Hammer created her ‘a painting a day’ series as a way to challenge herself and take a break from her other projects which can take weeks to complete. Her series of small (6”x6”, 6”x8”, 5”x7”) still life paintings depicting everyday objects will be on display at the Gallery at The Brown Hotel through Friday, Oct. 14. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free.
Hammer has an extensive drawing and painting background, including positions as a fashion illustrator for Louisville stores Stewarts and Byck’s. She has also used her talent for drawing at advertising agencies in Louisville and Chicago. More recently, Hammer has focused on fine art, studying drawing and art history at institutes in France, Italy and the United States. In addition to creating her own work, she currently teaches painting and drawing classes at the Louisville Visual Arts Association.
“I seek the beauty in real, everyday objects, from coffee cups to pliers,” she says about her series of paintings. “It is my hope that people will stop, look and see the dignity and soul of things that are often taken for granted.”
The Gallery at The Brown Hotel features local artists on a quarterly basis in order to bring awareness to Louisville’s visual arts scene. It is located on the first floor of the hotel.
