The name Aaron Burr is often
associated with one event: his duel with Alexander Hamilton.
There is so much more to Burr, including a dream to create his own empire in North America.
In American Emperor: Aaron Burr’s Challenge to Jefferson’s America, historian David O. Stewart tells this astonishing tale, which traces Burr’s descent from self-made man to political pariah
to imperialist adventurer. After rising to the very threshold of the highest position in the land, Burr’s ambitions and his pride got the better of him. Fired by a thirst for vengeance against his nemesis, President Thomas Jefferson, Burr plotted an insurrection in New Orleans and a private invasion of the Spanish colonies of Mexico and Florida. Finally arrested in Mississippi at the head of a ragtag flotilla of one hundred adventurers, Burr faced treason charges before Chief Justice John Marshall in an extraordinary trial that shaped American law in ways that still impact us today.
After practicing law for more than 25 years, David O. Stewart turned to writing history (though he still practices law).
