Though NYC musician and poet ALAN SEMERDFIAN's work is not easy to classify (one critic called it a bittersweet kind of “semi-pop concerned with the business of longing”), it seems to always find its way into the lives of music enthusiasts and creative and interesting people all over the world. With over 1,000 performances in a myriad of musical genres, television, film, radio, and CMJ credits, and several self-released studio and live albums over the past 15 years, he may be one of the best singer/songwriters you’ve never heard of. He has also published two books of poetry and appeared in dozens of print and digital anthologies, literary magazines, and various journals across the country and the world…all while teaching high school English.
His latest musical effort, The Big Beauty (alanarts, 2009), is a poignant and emotive exploration of what it means to be in a relationship – the fear, the beauty, and everything in between. Though this is perhaps Alan’s most commercially accessible work to date, it still retains the gutsy inventiveness and integrity of one of New York City’s most interesting voices. Alan is currently in the process of writing and recording a new catalogue of introspective and mostly finger-picked music tentatively called Quiet Songs for Loud Times.
