Matthew Paul Miller, known by his Hebrew name and stage name MATISYAHU, is an international hip-hop, reggae sensation.
When MATISYAHU released his debut album in 2004, Shake Off the Dust...Arise, his musical persona was a novelty: a Hasidic Jew with a full beard and long curls, dressed in a black suit with a broad-brimmed black hat worn over a yarmulke, who rapped in the Jamaican dancehall style. However, Matisyahu was serious about his craft, and his diverse style – along with hits “Jerusalem” (2004), “King Without a Crown” (2006), “One Day” (2009), and “Live Like A Warrior” (2012) – have garnered Grammy nominations, and a broad audience.
On his new album, Spark Seeker, Matisyahu cites Judaism as the engine for his creative output while singing about spiritual freedom. In a 2012 interview with the Daily Mail (UK), Matisyahu spoke about his transformation. “The last decade of my life has been immersed in Judaism and Jewish culture and Jewish religion and Jewish spirituality and I really took that as far as I could take it. I’ve started to find other things resonating…”
