Ovarian Awareness of Kentucky (O.A.K.) hopes this letter finds you and your business enjoying a prosperous 2014.

On Saturday, September13, 2014 O.A.K. will be holding our 6th Annual “Dee Edwards Memorial Ovarian Cancer Whisper Walk”. This walk is very near and dear to our hearts as we remember our fallen ovarian cancer survivor Dee Edwards and also celebrate what Dee stood for. Dee was vibrant, an advocate, an educator (science teacher at Crosby Middle School), and what she was most proud of was being a young mother and loving wife. Through Dee’s strength, other ovarian cancer survivors have found comfort, friendship and hope.

Ovarian Cancer is the deadliest of all female cancers and there is NO TEST! Many women unfortunately believe that their annual pap smear or the CA125 blood screening tests for Ovarian Cancer, and let me repeat again, there is NO TEST! And for that reason, many call this disease the “Silent Killer”. Ovarian Cancer is not Silent. The symptoms may not scream, but they do whisper.

The 2014 “Dee Edwards Memorial Ovarian Cancer Whisper Walk” will bring together gynecological cancer survivors, their friends and families, and allow for those families that have had to say goodbye to their survivor to come and remember how special and courageous their survivor was.

For many years O.A.K. has received questions on why we don’t organize a large walk like the many Breast Cancer organizations. The answer is hard but simple; more women are diagnosed with Breast Cancer, but unfortunately more die respectively from Ovarian Cancer. This walk will allow O.A.K. to raise funds for education initiatives in Kentucky. For every woman that is diagnosed in early stage 1 or 2, they have a 93% chance to survive. Most of our survivors are diagnosed stage 3 or 4. Based on the 2012 American Cancer Society statistics Kentucky will have 330 NEW women diagnosed and 220 will die each year.
