“I know I’m not supposed to say ‘stupid,’ but I want to call the virus ‘stupid.’”

    — Miles, my three-year-old

This week’s question: What part of your new routine will you continue after quarantine? You can simply reply to this email if you’ve got something you want to share.

    Thanks so much for reading,

    Josh Moss
    editor, Louisville Magazine

Last week’s question, inspired by what should have been Derby 146 on the first Saturday in May: Who is “winning” quarantine? (More answers here.)

“It’s a three-way tie: ESPN, for airing the Michael Jordan documentary The Last Dance early; Nintendo Switch, for blessing us with the new Animal Crossing game; and me, for buying my laid-off fiancé a new baseball simulator game to keep him happy and distracted.”

    Alexandra Winters
Production and media manager, Louisville Magazine

“Drinkers. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love to-go cocktails. It is going to be hard rolling back the liquor laws when this is over.”

    Michael L. Jones
    Louisville Magazine contributing writer

“Simple answer: dogs. Our dogs are getting more walks and attention than ever before.”

    Laura Shine
    WFPK DJ

“I own a business making custom window treatments. When COVID-19 hit Kentucky, I started getting calls for face masks. I couldn’t believe healthcare workers would even consider wearing a homemade cloth mask. A friend called to ask me about a face mask, and, next thing she knew, I’d recruited her to cut masks. Before long, we had a team of four: one person sewing, a couple cutters/coordinators and a social media/delivery guru. We have made and donated more than 3,500 face masks by reaching out to our neighbors and getting them to sew too. Never has sewing been so fulfilling.”

    Reader Kathy Grindstaff

“I still usually know what day it is, which I count as a win.”

    Michelle Eigenheer
    Louisville Magazine contributing writer

    FIVE.

    1. Every year, our July issue highlights the Best of Louisville. Usually that means burgers, barbers, boutiques, etc., but this year we are dedicating Best of Louisville to the class of 2020. The goal: I want to interview every single local high school senior. Please help spread the word. Here are the questions.
I just dug my senior yearbook out of the basement, and it reminded me that I saw The Fast and the Furious (the original one!) in the theater the night it came out. Nobody from the class of 2020 has mentioned that movie, but here’s a sampling of what students (107 and counting) have said so far:

Something unexpected you miss right now?
“The faces of people whose names I don’t know but whose faces I do.” — Eleanor Barzun, Collegiate

Who would be on your dream Zoom call?
“My TARC driver, George, because I really want to check up on him and make sure he’s OK. He’s honestly the nicest person ever. One time I accidentally lost my TARC card on his bus, and he carried it around for a week until I took his bus again and he gave it back to me.” — Natalie Paige Ambrosino, Assumption

    What sounds do you miss?
“‘Hi, could I start you off with any drinks or appetizers?’” — Mazari Brightwell, Male

Has Covid-19 affected somebody close to you?
“My mom, Stephanie Tarter, is an RN at Baptist Hospital, and I pray for her every time she goes to work.” — Madison Tarter, Eastern

Where will you visit first once we’re allowed?
“Manual. I never got the chance to say goodbye.” — Ysa Leon, Manual

    2. “2020 Pulitzer Prize Winner” sure looks good on the front page of the C-J. Joe Gerth, in a column this week: Then-Gov. Matt Bevin “couldn’t see how silly it was to challenge reporters to dig into something” — his pardons — “that could only prove he was never equipped to be governor to begin with.” As Gov. Andy Beshear would say: “We can’t be doin’ that.”

    3. Read the coverage from the WDRB sports reporters on Cards basketball and the NCAA Notice of Allegations. As with all U of L sports matters, I texted My Buddy Eric Who Has A Vintage Cardinal Mascot Tattooed On His Ass. What kind of punishment should U of L hoops prepare for? “Man, I hope nothing. Not one of the coaches, nor the AD, are still here. Hopefully the NCAA will take it easy on us.”

    4. Last month, reporters from WFPL and the Kentucky Center for Investigative Reporting fanned out across the city — from Costco in the East End to the senior-living facility Treyton Oak Towers in Old Louisville to a ballet dancer’s backyard in Clifton Heights — to tell our city’s quarantine story over the course of one day. It aired this week, and you can read it or, better yet, listen to it here.

    5.

This is a photo of all that remains of the cookie cake (and its addictive salted buttercream) that my family had delivered from Please & Thank You yesterday for my birthday. (I know! I didn’t know P&TY makes cookie cakes either! Also, shout-out to senior editor Dylon Jones, who sent FOUR orders of churros to my house from Taco City.) That coupled with the news that Hammerheads is opening a second location? We’re gonna get through this.

    OH!

In the January 2018 issue of Louisville Magazine, Colin Moore, co-owner of the Louisville Game Shop on Bardstown Road, gave a prescient board game recommendation: Pandemic. “The flagship cooperative game,” he said. “All the players are researchers or medics trying to save the world from the outbreak of diseases. You’re working as a team against the game.”

    TOO...

For last week’s Five. Oh! Too…, I asked several ARTxFM DJs to suggest Tupac songs for quarantine, after Gov. Beshear called out a “bad apple” for filing for unemployment under the fake name Tupac Shakur…who, turns out, is a 46-year-old cook in Lexington who goes by Malik.
Accidently deleted this during editing: “‘Better Dayz’ forces you to question your choices, those you made in early age or recent years. This pairs perfectly with our current situation, when conversations always circle back to when things were better. Tupac discusses the struggles of making ends meet. With so many people being out of work and worrying about how to put food on the table and how to pay rent, the relatability is chilling.” — DJ Wild Bill

Louisville Magazine couldn’t do the work we do without support from hundreds of businesses and organizations over the years. Too many to thank in this newsletter. But last week we included 26 of them, one for every letter of the alphabet. There are enough of ’em to do that again.
Against the Grain Brewery, Baptist Health, Churchill Downs, Derby City Chop Shop, Evan Williams Bourbon Experience, Frazier History Museum, Galen College of Nursing, Heine Bros.’ Coffee, Impellizzeri’s, Jefferson Community and Technical College, Kentucky Opera, Louisville Dental Society, Margaret’s Consignment, Nanz & Kraft, Old 502 Winery, Proof on Main, Shack in the Back BBQ (see, there’s a Q in BBQ), Rainbow Blossom, Simply Thai, TARC, UPS, Volare, Wallitsch Garden Center, Apex Theatres (and, yeah, there’s an X in Apex), Young Professionals Association of Louisville, Zanzabar.

Note: This newsletter used to be called the Weekender. We hope you’ll subscribe and continue reading every Friday.

A current copy of Louisville Magazine is included with every delivery order from Carmichael’s Bookstore. Or get one on newsstands or by emailing circulation@loumag.com.
