Blood may be thicker than water, but in Gilles Legrand's gripping drama You Will Be My Son, fine red wine may be thickest of all. Paul de Marseul is the owner of a prestigious vineyard in Saint-Émilion, in France's rich Bordeaux region. His son Martin works closely with him on the family estate; but Paul, a demanding and passionate winegrower, has serious doubts that his son has the persistence, talent, and creativity to succeed him in the family business. Paul reminds Martin of his opinions via constant subtle jabs and put-downs, although nothing is explicitly stated. However, when Philippe, the well-educated son of Paul's steward, arrives at the vineyard, the plot is set in motion as Paul immediately ignores Martin and transfers his attention to the new protégé. In Philippe, Paul sees the ideal son he feels he never had and makes it clear who he would prefer to continue his legacy. Thus begins a tense chess game between the two parents and two sons, while the women in their lives look on helplessly, until an unexpected event changes the families forever. You Will Be My Son is a full-bodied drama, ripe with Shakespearian undertones of familial intrigue and finishing with strong notes of jealousy, with a hint of betrayal. See the trailer here.
