A musical about writing a musical…about writing a musical!
Have you ever wondered what it is like to create a brand new Broadway musical? Well, the Floyd Central Musical Theatre Lab’s production of [title of show] explores just that! [title of show] is a full-fledged Broadway musical about four friends who are writing the very show that they are performing. The original production, written by Jeff Bowen and Hunter Bell, premiered in New York in 2004 and was followed by a run on Broadway in 2008. The story largely follows Jeff, Hunter and their friends, Susan and Heidi, as they endeavor to create a musical that will both draw an audience (and producers) and stay true to who they are as people, performers, and creators. Filled with quirky humor and a whole lot of heart, this show is perfect for the theatre-lover.
Floyd Central is thrilled to welcome guest director Tyler Bliss for this production. Tyler is no stranger to Floyd Central Theatre Arts, having directed FC’s production of Thoroughly Modern Millie in 2013. He has worked locally as an actor with Derby Dinner Playhouse and Music Theatre Louisville/StageOne Family Theatre. As a 2005 graduate from New Albany High School, Tyler was immensely engaged in the theatre department during his four years. Tyler currently serves as Executive Director of the New Albany-Floyd County Education foundation where he assists all schools in the district by fundraising to provide resources for a variety of education initiatives. Tyler is assisted by his wife, Megan Bliss, who is the choreographer for the show. “Our students are extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to work with such a talented husband-wife team,” says FC’s Director of Theatre Arts, Robbie Steiner. “Tyler and Megan bring lots of enthusiasm and expertise to our program. It is especially wonderful for our students to learn from two distinguished artists who got their start in theatre within our own school system.”
The show features a small cast of experienced students. Senior Ryan Bickett and junior Henry Miller share the role of Jeff, each playing the role at alternating performances. Junior Joel Jackson plays Hunter. Senior Bonnie Hopkins plays the role of Heidi and Susan is played by sophomore Morgan Prentiss.
