Acting Against Cancer -- formerly known as Kids Acting Against Cancer, inc, a nonprofit theatre company that performs theatrical productions to raise money for pediatric cancer research and treatment -- will be performing an immersive and interactive presentation of Tom Stoppard's comedy "The Real Inspector Hound," directed by Remy Sisk, April 10 through 19 in The Alley Theater.
In July 2014, Acting Against Cancer signed a $100,000 pledge to the art therapy program within the Addison Jo Blair Cancer Care Center at Kosair Children's Hospital; accordingly, 100% of the profits from "The Real Inspector Hound" and Acting Against Cancer's upcoming 2015-2015 season will go toward fulfilling that pledge. Since its inception in 1999, Acting Against Cancer has raised over $350,000 and currently operates as a full-fledged theatre company, producing three shows per season.
The organization has performed in several different venues around Louisville with past shows including the regional premiere of Spring Awakening, RENT, The Rocky Horror Show and, most recently, Next to Normal.
From the moment guests step into The Alley Theater for "The Real Inspector Hound," they will be swept into an immersive theatre experience. The lobby of the theater will be transformed for each performance into a mysterious speakeasy: The Underground Hound Lounge. For the first hour, audience members will socialize in the lounge and slowly find themselves blending into the story. Collaborating closely with the actors from the show in the style of New York City's popular attraction "Sleep No More," the guests will begin to uncover a mystery that holds the key to unlocking the puzzling center of "The Real Inspector Hound."
Guests will then make their way into the theatre to witness the baffling whodunit of "The Real Inspector Hound" wherein two London theatre critics are watching a murder mystery much in the style of an Agatha Christie drama.
Or are they? The smarmy and pompous Birdboot and the insecure but skillful Moon look on from the audience as the lines delineating spectator and spectacle begin to bend. Critics soon become actors and actors become critics as identities and realities are blurred in Tom Stoppard's hysterical, uproarious and perplexing postmodern.
The show will take place at 8:00 p.m. on April 10, 11, 13, 16 and 17. Two matinee performances at 2:00 p.m will be on April 12 and 19. The lounge will open half an hour prior to all performances. The entire experience will last two hours. While intellectually engaging, the show and experience is appropriate for all ages.
Tickets are $24 for regular performances and $12 for industry night performances on the 13th and 16th. Tickets can be purchased at the door or online in advance at actingagainstcancer.com. Admission includes participation in the preshow mystery, an intoxicating concoction, retro style hors d'oeuvres and, of course, a seat for the show.
