Encouraging young artists is an investment in a future rich in culture. Through this show we hope to embolden the next generation of our budding Kentucky artists to continue and pursue their artistic practice. “The Next Generation" is a juried group show presenting artworks by student artists currently enrolled in Kentucky colleges or high schools in the following counties: Jefferson, Fayette, Jessamine, Warren, Taylor, Campbell, Oldham, and Marion.

The student artists included in this exhibition explore various genres in their work such as portraiture, abstract, and still life. The gaze of the artist confronts the viewer in Christian Nelson’s black and white photograph, “Self Portrait.” An abstract conglomeration set against an expressive red background emerges from the psyche in Nicholas J. Smith’s oil painting, “Cherokee ’95.” Kentucky spirit is showcased in Elizabeth Clare Taylor’s elaborately layered acrylic still life painting, “50 Bottles of Bourbon on the Wall.” Taylor explores Kentucky heritage and tradition in her work; she states, “I hope to capture not only the beauty of the bottles themselves but also of the craft surrounding the bourbon culture.”

Craig Kaviar, a renowned sculptor and blacksmith, is an advocate of Kentucky visual art and an avid believer in the importance of celebrating local arts and crafts. “The Next Generation” will run from March 31st – April 29th. The Opening Reception will be held at Kaviar Gallery on March 31st 6-9PM during the F.A.T Friday Trolley Hop!
