Dragon Boat Racing is Louisville’s latest watersport. It is a fun, social, high energy activity that anyone can do! Dragon Boats are large 43 foot, 550 pound vessels, that are powered by the technique and teamwork of 20 paddlers, 1 drummer, and a steersperson.

Though Dragon Boat Racing is new to Louisville, it is actually the oldest team sport, which was started in China over 2,000 years ago. Now, it is the second fastest growing team sport in the world! (Second only to soccer). And once you experience the thrill of racing a dragon boat, you will know why!

Louisville Dragon Boat Festival takes place Saturday, September 12th at Waterfront Park.It is an all-day event, based around The Dragon Boat Races, but also includes family friendly cultural activities, performances, and food.

To compete in The Races this year, you can register for as an individual, or you can start your own team.

All you need to start a team is:
A captain (contact person),
Team name,
$50 minimum deposit.

Team will race at least 3 times throughout the day, 300 meters down the Ohio River (in front of the great lawn and wharf area). All skill levels are welcome, and remember most everyone in Louisville is still very new to Dragon Boat Racing, so we will mostly have a lot of beginner teams, that are competing for fun. There will be awards for team spirit, best outfit, fundraising, and more. The name of the game is teamwork!

(FUNDRAISING) Speaking of teamwork, any team that registers for the races has the option to raise pledges for their favorite charitable organization. With up to 25 people per team, a little bit from everyone, can go a very long way!

Since our event is put on by a local nonprofit organization (Louisville Third Century: known for Strassenfest and other major events in Louisville), we are especially interested in using this unique fundraising platform to bring funds and awareness to other charities. Where they can reap the benefits of being a part of a large festival/fundraising event, without having to take on all of the costs, liability, and preparation to make it happen.
