The Clifton Center will host a concert celebrating the work of folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, on Monday, May 4 at 7:30pm. This collaboratory concert brings together some of the country's most distinctive and creative roots musicians to revive, recycle and re-imagine traditional music. The repertoire includes Bahamian sea chanties, African-American a cappella singing from the Georgia Sea Islands, Old World weavers' work songs, ancient Appalachian ballads, fiddle tunes, game songs and ring shouts. Collaborators include Grammy-winning songwriter Tim O'Brien, among many others. Tickets are $23 and are available at Carmichael's Bookstore, 2720 Frankfort Avenue, or online at www.cliftoncenter.org.
Two-time Juno-winning banjoist, composer and instigator Jayme Stone makes music inspired by sounds from around the world, bridging folk, jazz and chamber music. His award-winning albums both defy and honor the banjo's long role in the world's music, turning historical connections into compelling music. Stone is the consummate collaborator, unearthing musical artifacts and magnetizing extraordinary artists to help rekindle these understudied sounds.
The Clifton Center's programming is made possible by the help of generous supporters, such as: MINI of Louisville, Louisville Metro Government, West Sixth Brewing Company, DD Williamson, Carmichael's Bookstore, Republic Bank, Tilford Dobbins & Schmidt, Joe Hayden Real Estate Team, 91.9 WFPK and the Friends of the Clifton Center.
