If you’re a fan of bluegrass, like to play bluegrass or just enjoy being part of a collective gathering, the ninth annual “Itchin’ to Pick” returns to the Galt House on March 27-28. The most interesting aspect of the event is that there are no scheduled stage shows — the draw is the free-for-all, impromptu jam sessions that break out in nearly every nook and cranny in the historic hotel.

“Itchin’ to Pick” gathers music lovers from all over the region, and with a modest $5 admission fee that covers both days, it’s a great place to people-watch and hear some truly authentic bluegrass.

“Attending this event is a great way to perhaps receive a free lesson from an experienced musician as a means to perpetuate our Kentucky heritage, culture and bluegrass music education,” says organizer George Garrett. He adds the jam sessions tend to stretch into the wee hours of the morning, if not all night long.

“Itchin’ to Pick” begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 27.
