BACKSTORY
Ann Croghan, was the daughter of William & Lucy Clark Croghan, builders of Locust Grove. She married William Sidney Jesup at Locust Grove, May 17, 1822. Jesup was a military man and held the post of quartermaster general of the United States Army for 42 years. Her father, William Croghan died the same year, Sept. 21, 1822. Little is known of the actual wedding, except this tantalizing tidbit in a letter dated May 10, 1822, “I suppose on the occasion of so great a match for Ann Croghan there will be a splendid wedding accompanied by much hustle and display.” Letter from John O’Fallon to Dennis Fitzhugh in St. Louis.
Locust Grove costumed interpreter Hannah Stoppel will be portraying Ann Croghan and making the 1822 style wedding dress. Look for information about this in upcoming posts of the Locust Grove blog or visit Hannah Stoppel’s blog for the full story.
