A pianist of “unerring, warm-toned refinement, revealing judicious glimmers of power,” [Los Angeles Times] Robert Thies (pronounced "Theece") is an artist renowned for his consummate musicianship and poetic temperament. He first captured worldwide attention in 1995 when he won the Gold Medal at the Second International Prokofiev Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia. With this victory, Thies became the only American pianist to win first prize in a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn’s famed triumph in Moscow in 1958.
When Tchaikovsky completed his Sixth Symphony, he wrote to a friend, “I myself consider it the best and especially the most open-hearted of my works. I love it as I have never loved any of my other musical offspring.”
Originally the composer called this work a “Program Symphony” but after the first performance he realized the title didn’t work. The name came from his brother Modest. Modest suggested patetichesky, which translates into English as pathetic. In Russian, however, the word means an emotional or passionate suffering—a richer context than the English pathetic, and one that is most apt for both the composer and his last work.
