From mid-century modern credenzas to repurposed light fixtures and rustic cradles, Louisvillians will have the chance to discover handcrafted furniture by local makers at the first exhibition of the Louisville Area Furniture Society (LAFS).
LAFS will present “Functional Design 2015” Oct. 9-11 at Fresh Start Growers’ Supply, 1007 E. Jefferson Street, in conjunction with the October Flea Off Market show. An opening reception will kick-off the exhibition on Friday, Oct. 9.
Featuring the work of seven local furniture makers, “Functional Design 2015” will showcase pieces including tables, custom built-ins, chairs and more.
The goal of LAFS, founded in March by co-presidents Craig Bayens and Peyton Hoge, is to promote original design and highlight the craftsmanship of local makers.
“Many people don’t consider furniture when they’re thinking about buying local,” Bayens said. “We bring something unique to the community, one-of-a-kind pieces that design-savvy customers are seeking.”
Like Bayens and Hoge, most of the members of LAFS don’t have storefronts, but may have pieces featured in local stores. The chance to view work by multiple makers in one place will be a first for the community.
The opening reception for “Functional Design 2015” will be 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 9, at Fresh Start Growers’ Supply. In addition to the furniture display, there will be music from DJ Sam Sneed, a cash bar and Pollo food truck. Admission is free and open to the public.
Participants in the show are Craig Bayens, Peyton Hoge, Ben Pegram, Carter Scott, Billie Bradford, David Metcalf and Ryan Goff.
