Flight features works by three women from Greater Cincinnati who specifically reference flight in regard to time, space and experience. Exploring the notions of passage, memory and dialogue within the cycle of life, the exhibition includes mixed media constructions, collaged books and earthenware ceramics.
Artists of the Exhibition:
Sharmon Davidson's work is intensely personal and explores her own childhood mythology and vocabulary. Her personal cycle of life conveys a deep belief in the unity and connectedness of everything in the universe. Davidson received an MA in Education and BFA in Drawing and Art Education from Northern Kentucky University.
Marsha Karagheusian's connects us to the past and to the present, reflecting on the cycle of life of her ethnic group, the Armenians, at the occasion of the 100thanniversary of their genocide. Karagheusian received an MFA in Ceramics from Arizona State Universtiy and a BFA in Ceramics from Northern Kentucky University. She is currently a Professor of Art & Education at Xavier University.
Jan Nickum's addresses the cycle of life of birds who, unlike humans, spend nearly their entire lives in the air, messengers between the common, the physical and the ethereal - liaisons between the earth and the sky. Nickum attended the Art Academy of Cincinnati and has exhibited at galleries in Houston, Galveston and Cincinnati.
About the Curator: Saad Ghosn is an artist, activist, Professor at the University of Cincinnati and the Director of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center. He writes Art For a Better World for Aeqai and has curated nearly 200 exhibitions, often focused on aspects of activism and social justice.
