Theophile Conrad, an immigrant from France was well-known as a fine gentleman of good character and one of Louisville's most influential and successful businessman of his time. As a leader in leather manufacturing and in civic responsibilities he helped shape Louisville in the mid-19th century.
His loyalty to his adopted city has been one of his most distinguishing characteristics and his devotion to the city was shown in his investments and civic involvement where he took an active interest in the improvement of the public education system and ensuring Louisville' future as an industrial center. As a board and committee member of the 1st Southern Exposition, he was instrumental in gaining the cooperation of many business owners related to his leather tanning business in putting together an exhibit at the 1893 Southern Exposition contributing to the success and popularity of the event.
