A five-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical based on The Who’s iconic hit 1969 rock concept album of the same name, will blow minds as it explodes onto our stage in this high-energy theatrical event. “Tommy” is the exhilarating story of a pinball-playing, deaf, dumb and blind boy who triumphs over unsurmountable adversities. The show will celebrate The Who’s 50th anniversary and the band’s sold-out Louisville concert in May and theatergoers can see for themselves why “Tommy” is a story of hope, healing and the human spirit that has inspired, amazed and puzzled audiences for more than 40 years.
About CenterStage
CenterStage continues to push boundaries and bring cutting-edge Broadway musicals to Louisville with its 2015-16 season with new shows like “The Who’s Tommy,” Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5: The Musical,” “Big Fish,” and a locally written show, “Patsy Cline: A Life in Concert.” By bringing to the stage a perfect mix of new Broadway smash hits never performed in Louisville, as well as popular traditional classics, CenterStage’s 2015-16 season will continue excite and amaze audiences.
Keeping with this theme of innovation, CenterStage will do something completely new this year – run two shows at the same time. Everyone will yell “yee haw!” as Melissa Kenney Shepherd two-steps her way back to our stage for the third encore of “Patsy Cline: A Life in Concert.” Joining her will be Mike Fryman, one of best honky-tonk singers in this area. And running simultaneously, the cult classic audience favorite based on the popular film, “The Rocky Horror Show”: a perfect finale to the season.
“We spend a great deal of time when considering shows for our upcoming season. We consider our audience, our actors, our mission, to name a few, and then work to create a balance between new and classic, comedy and drama, family and adult,” said John R. Leffert, CenterStage artistic director. “I feel part of my job is to produce new works and challenge our audiences. If we do not do this, these pieces will never be seen. Filling that bill in the new season is ‘Big Fish.’ I saw it on Broadway and was moved beyond belief. I knew I wanted to bring it home to CenterStage and to our audiences.”
