Canine obesity is a risk factor for disease. Not only does it increase the stress on the joints and heart, excess weight also increases hormone and inflammatory mediator release, creating chronic low-level inflammation. Educating clients about the importance of weight management is key to improving the health of at-risk dogs. Incorporating a routine exercise schedule, high-protein, high-fiber, and low-calorie diet aids in designing a realistic weight-loss program.
Louisville Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Services understands the demanding challenges facing an owner with an obese pet. So, we are happy to introduce our “Canine Biggest Loser” (please inquire about cost) challenge beginning Feb 9, 2009. The contest will consist of 10 participants, obese but otherwise healthy, dogs. Each participant will be required to undergo a health screening (can be done with primary care veterinarian), optionally placed on Slentrol (pharmaceutical diet aid for dogs only), exercise twice weekly for 6 weeks, weekly weight rechecks, and measurements every 3 weeks. All contestants will receive participation prizes. However, the top 3 canines with the greatest percentage of weight loss will receive even more incredible prizes. There will be an awards ceremony on Sunday, Apr 5, 2009. Time and place TBD.
We would love your help to inform the community of this competition, educate owners on healthy living for their pets, and help our pets lose weight, the right way. If your magazine/newspaper/news channel would like to report this event, please call Jackie Sharp at 502-244-3036 or e-mail: jhonghern@yahoo.com. Thank you in advance for your support.
