The Jewish Community Center along with the Jewish Community Federation present Remember for Life, Yom HaShoah 2009, A Holocaust Commemoration on Monday, April 20 at 7:00 pm. This year’s community-wide event seeks to give younger generations the opportunity to witness stories of holocaust survivors, and give them a personal connection to our world’s history. Additionally, Remember for Life strives to create awareness of similar situations today and convey the responsibility of standing up to injustice and hatred.
The event will be held in Frazier Hall at Bellarmine University. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the Louisville Youth Choir and Cantors David Lipp and Sharon Hordes. Rabbi Bradley Hirschfield, president of The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership, will be speaking, retelling survivor stories in five sections, representing the first five books of the bible, or the five books of Moses. For the story of Genesis, where the focus is family, Hirschfield and musical accompanists will concentrate on family experiences before the holocaust. Relating to the story of Exodus, the program will draw attention to early oppression and happenings leading up to the holocaust.
In conjunction with the commemoration, there will be a Holocaust Memorial Exhibition at the Jewish Community Center of Louisville displaying Yad Vashem’s photography memorializing the holocaust. The exhibit will be on display April 19 – May 5 and is free to the public.
