Those who visited the annual Light Up St. Matthews in Brown Park on Nov. 28 were met by an unpleasant surprise – no Christmas lights.
Vandals cut nearly every electrical cord – 200 to 300 in all – connected to light displays of reindeer, snowmen and Santa Claus. The day’s other festivities went on as scheduled with a petting zoo, tethered hot-air balloon rides and visits with Santa Claus, but disappointment was evident on the faces of many at the event.
When talking to the crowd, organizers attributed the vandalism to the “Grinch,” and they eventually lit the display’s 30-foot Christmas tree, said Pete Hammer, owner of St. Matthews Hardware and president of the St. Matthews Area Business Association (SMABA), which sponsors the event along with the city of St. Matthews.
But the Grinch’s victory was short-lived.
